Advent Calendar

This is a photo of my eldest when she was 4, with her Advent Calendar. I cross stitched 24 little pictures and then made bags which hang from brass curtain rings, each year these are filled with Quality Street or Roses, with a tiny present in the 24th. It is stretched over wood and is quite heavy. (Three years later I made another for daughter 2)

Anyway, she asked me how she was going to get it to uni and bring it back with her for the Christmas Hols. I decided that this was impractical, so it will be waiting for her when she gets back, I made her this mini one to take back with her this weekend.

A pretty box (I found a whole set of these - packed like a russian doll - all inside one another, at a Car Boot for £1!!)

24 red felt bags, with gold trim glued and pegged til dry

Cute choccy santas and father Christmasses

Bags decorated and filled, for some reason there was an extra father Christmas at this point, oh well!!

Packed into the box, the final touch was a liberal sprinkling of tiny glittery stars after this photo was taken. I hope she likes it.

  1. What a pretty and festive box filled with such an inventive advent calendar for you daughter ! She will just love it. And a tradition adapted and carried on. What a labor of love and great fun. I can see you have been busy. I just got back from the fabric store last night and bought fabric for some Christmas gifts. They too will be labors of love ! Take care, Janice (Upstate NY)

  3. Oh, that's just adorable. That's the hardest part when they go away for school -- they're gone for part of the traditions. Great solution you've found!

  4. What a clever idea. Wherever do you find your inspiration? Such a lucky girl to have such a clever mum! (Thanks for the cake timing!)

  5. Cool calendar and so much more portable! I love the idea she wanted to take the original, though.... tradition is such a vital part of Christmas, isn't it! Hope she has a great time at Uni in the run up to Christmas!

  6. What a lovely idea! How children love tradition. I made stockings for my 3 children when they were small and they still use them ( my eldest is 28). A few years I ago I suggested that we did not have stockings anymore and there was nearly a riot!

  8. I was really pleased for you to visit my blog, thank you very much. What a great idea to make a 'portable' advent calendar and to carry on your family tradition, having it at 'uni' your daughter will be able to count down the days before coming home at Christmas, she will love it. It is more of a struggle now, but you can still find a bargain at a carboot. I expect you were pleased with that extra chocolate santa for all your efforts! Louise x

  13. Hi9,
craftycherry here. Thanks so much for stopping by my site and leaving your comments on dyslexia. So heartening to hear of your own daughter doing so well. I know my Alex can achieve so much just with the right support and ongoing education. Her teacher is right on board. Yah for our small country school. By the way i love your advent calenders. I will be posting some photos of our two year old advent calender I made soon. Just got my new computer attachment today to put photos on the net again!
    Take care
